For over two decades, Colombia’s Rubber and Plastic Institute for Training and Research (ICIPC), a non-profit technology development center, has been at the forefront of efforts to boost innovation, increase productivity and enhance the competitiveness of companies operating in the country’s plastics, rubber and associated industries. Just three years after it began operations in 1993, ICIPC partnered with COLCIENCIAS, the government’s science, technology and innovation arm, further cementing its role as a key player in Colombia’s drive to strengthen and expand its national innovation ecosystem.

Con el objetivo de fortalecer la cooperación internacional en actividades de ciencia, tecnología e innovación, el Instituto de Capacitación e Investigación del Plástico y del Caucho – ICIPC- y la Corporación Ruta N, anuncian la llegada del Instituto alemán Fraunhofer a Medellín. Todo esto dentro del marco de un convenio de cooperación para consolidar una red que impulse el ecosistema de ciencia y tecnología en la ciudad, el cual responderá a necesidades importantes en sectores como: energía, agroindustria, TICs, salud, automoción, empaques y envases.

El convenio de cooperación internacional se establecerá en el Instituto de Capacitación e Investigación del Plástico y del Caucho – ICIPC y llevará a cabo la adquisición y la realización de proyectos de investigación aplicada y desarrollo tecnológico siguiendo el modelo Fraunhofer. Este modelo consiste en cubrir la financiación de los proyectos con fondos provenientes del sector público de orden regional o nacional, fondos competidos o convocatorias públicas y aportes de la industria. Ruta N, Colciencias y la Universidad EAFIT apoyan este convenio de cooperación internacional como parte de su apuesta por el apalancamiento de capacidades de los centros de investigación a través de alianzas con institutos internacionales de talla mundial.

Solo existen dos centros de proyectos Fraunhofer en esta región del continente, uno en Brasil y otro en Chile. El convenio de cooperación internacional de Medellín aspira a convertirse en un centro de proyectos Fraunhofer en el futuro. Su enfoque se centrará en materiales poliméricos sostenibles y procesos y aplicaciones relacionadas con el internet de las cosas (Internet of Things).

Sobre el Instituto Fraunhofer:
Es la mayor organización de investigación aplicada de Europa, conformada por 67 institutos y centros de investigación (distribuidos por toda Alemania y otros países) en temas como salud, energía, seguridad, comunicación, producción industrial, transporte y movilidad, medio ambiente, entre otros. Cuenta con cerca de 24.000 empleados, la mayor parte con formación académica de alto nivel en ciencias naturales e ingenierías. Se dedica a la investigación aplicada, de acuerdo a las necesidades de la industria, tanto para compañías privadas como públicas y para la sociedad en general.

Su presupuesto anual alcanza los 2.000 millones de euros, de los cuales aproximadamente 1.700 (70%) provienen de investigación por contrato, financiada por la industria. Este esquema de financiar el 70% de su presupuesto por medio de los contratos con la industria ha tenido gran resonancia internacional y se conoce como el “Modelo Fraunhofer”.

El principio de acción de este instituto es realizar investigación dedicada al futuro. Fraunhofer investiga de acuerdo a las necesidades de la industria pero basado en la excelencia científica.

Ruta N es una corporación creada por la Alcaldía de Medellín, Grupo EPM y TIGO-UNE. Lo que comenzó en 2010 como un sueño, es hoy un acontecimiento de ciudad, un símbolo de la innovación y del desarrollo tecnológico de Medellín. The ICIPC in agreement with EAFIT University offers the graduate program in Plastic and Rubber Processing.

Our program was issued for the first time in 1995 and hold a high reputation since then. This program has been taken by professionals in Colombia, South and Central America.

Our program is designed for professionals involved in the plastic and rubber industries. In order to allow the attendance of professionals out of the city, the classes are taken during one intense studying week each month for three academic semesters.

Ph. D. Iván Darío López

 

Current ICIPC General Director. Production Engineer of Universidad EAFIT with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on Polymer Processing of University of Wisconsin - Madison, in the United States. He worked at the Polymer Engineering Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison as research and teaching assistant. Linked to ICIPC since 2003, he served as Deputy Director of Products until July 2012, when he was appointed as Technical Director of the institute.  His expertise areas include modeling and simulation, rheology, injection molding, packaging engineering and product development. Co-inventor in an USPTO and PCT patent application. Co-author of several publications and presentations at international events and specialized software for the ICIPC

 Mag. Omar Estrada Ramírez

 

Chemical Engineer graduated of Universidad Nacional of Colombia and graduate studies in Plastic and Rubber Processing of Universidad EAFIT. He holds the title of Master of Engineering in Polymer Processing of Universidad EAFIT. He worked in the Technical Division of ICIPC, specifically in the area of Extrusion, from 1997 to 2006. He joined as chief operating officer of a company in Medellín until February 2009 and since then he serves as Continuous Process Area Manager of ICIPC. Co-author of numerous articles in national and international journals.

 Mag. Silvio Ospina

Chemist and BA in Mathematics and Master of Science in Chemistry of Universidad de Antioquia, where he was a polymer materials professor for 3 years. He has been working as researcher and professional of the ICIPC chemical labs since 1998. Co-author of articles in national and international journals.

Mag. Alexánder Hernández M.

Mechanical Engineer graduated of Universidad EAFIT and graduate studies in Plastic and Rubber Processing of Universidad EAFIT. He holds the title of Master of Engineering in Polymer Processing of Universidad EAFIT. He has 16 years of experience in the plastics sector industries. In 1994 he worked for 2 years at ICIPC as Rubber Department assistant and since 2013 he joined the Institute as Product Area Manager. He is co-inventor of international patent applications and co-author of articles in national and international journals.

Mag. Catalina Álvarez R.


Chemist of Universidad de Antioquia with graduate studies in Plastic and Rubber Processing of Universidad EAFIT - ICIPC. He holds the title of Master of Engineering in the same university. She has taken specialized courses in gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography. She worked as chemist  in the maintenance and technical support area at Khymos and in the toxicology lab of the transport secretary office of Medellín. She works as researcher and professional of the ICIPC chemical labs since 2012.

El ICIPC has developed the following software in topics like optimization of extrusion process, injection of polymers and in the food sector in areas such as migration and permeation:

  • Inyectools® are a set of computational tools to streamline the design process and components of plastic processing equipment parts as well as the optimization of processes in the plastics and rubber.
  • Extrutools® are a set of computational tools to optimize extrusion processes thanks to the calculation of variables such as operating curves of an extruder or screw extrusion.
  • Migrasoft® is web application that enables the validation of compliance with specific migration regulations following the guidelines laid down in EU regulation 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.
  • Permeasoft® is a software that allows you to adjust the barrier properties of multilayer plastic packaging according to the requirements of preservation of food or drink, and in turn, estimate the shelf life of a product for a packaging and storage conditions given.

The ICIPC has developed technologies that have resulted in patent applications, patents granted, books and articles than have been translated into several languages and qualified as best sellers, containing information of interest to students, interns and researchers. Some of these issues have been even presented in academic events.

These realize the extensive experience and knowledgement that our human talent has for our customers, adhering partners, suppliers, and other public of interest of the ICIPC.

El grupo de investigación aplicada en polímeros del ICIPC ha obtenido la máxima categoría "A1" en la reciente convocatoria nacional para el reconocimiento y medición de grupos de investigación, desarrollo tecnológico o de innovación del Sistema Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación, Convocatoria 737 de 2015 de Colciencias.

A esta convocatoria se inscribieron 5.796 grupos, los cuales fueron avalados por las diferentes instituciones del país y cuyos registros se encuentran en el aplicativo GrupLac. En esta convocatoria, 4.434 grupos de investigación, desarrollo tecnológico o de innovación fueron reconocidos por Colciencias. Los resultados fueron publicados el 11 de abril de 2016.

Migrasoft® is a software tool for validation of compliance with specific migration regulations following the guidelines established in EU regulation 10/2011 (up amendment No 202/2014) on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

Some features are:

  • Classification of food according to the categories defined by EU regulation 10/2011
  • Definition of the simulants assigned according to EU regulation 10/2011, depending on the food category
  • Determination of time and temperature of the migration assay following the lineaments of EU regulation 10/2011, the shelf life and storage conditions
  • Fat reduction factor (FRF) is automatically estimated according to the relationship Migrant - Simulant - Category Food
  • Combined analysis of migrants and simulants, evaluating in each case whether the specific migration limit (SML) is exceeded
  • The sum of specific migrations are considered, checking that the overall migration limit is not overflown
  • Migration limits for restricted group defined in EU regulation 10/2011 are taken into account
