The ICIPC in agreement with EAFIT University offers the graduate program in Plastic and Rubber Processing.

Our program was issued for the first time in 1995 and hold a high reputation since then. This program has been taken by professionals in Colombia, South and Central America.

Our program is designed for professionals involved in the plastic and rubber industries. In order to allow the attendance of professionals out of the city, the classes are taken during one intense studying week each month for three academic semesters.

Ph. D. Iván Darío López

 

Current ICIPC General Director. Production Engineer of Universidad EAFIT with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on Polymer Processing of University of Wisconsin - Madison, in the United States. He worked at the Polymer Engineering Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison as research and teaching assistant. Linked to ICIPC since 2003, he served as Deputy Director of Products until July 2012, when he was appointed as Technical Director of the institute.  His expertise areas include modeling and simulation, rheology, injection molding, packaging engineering and product development. Co-inventor in an USPTO and PCT patent application. Co-author of several publications and presentations at international events and specialized software for the ICIPC

 Mag. Omar Estrada Ramírez

 

Chemical Engineer graduated of Universidad Nacional of Colombia and graduate studies in Plastic and Rubber Processing of Universidad EAFIT. He holds the title of Master of Engineering in Polymer Processing of Universidad EAFIT. He worked in the Technical Division of ICIPC, specifically in the area of Extrusion, from 1997 to 2006. He joined as chief operating officer of a company in Medellín until February 2009 and since then he serves as Continuous Process Area Manager of ICIPC. Co-author of numerous articles in national and international journals.

 Mag. Silvio Ospina

Chemist and BA in Mathematics and Master of Science in Chemistry of Universidad de Antioquia, where he was a polymer materials professor for 3 years. He has been working as researcher and professional of the ICIPC chemical labs since 1998. Co-author of articles in national and international journals.

Mag. Alexánder Hernández M.

Mechanical Engineer graduated of Universidad EAFIT and graduate studies in Plastic and Rubber Processing of Universidad EAFIT. He holds the title of Master of Engineering in Polymer Processing of Universidad EAFIT. He has 16 years of experience in the plastics sector industries. In 1994 he worked for 2 years at ICIPC as Rubber Department assistant and since 2013 he joined the Institute as Product Area Manager. He is co-inventor of international patent applications and co-author of articles in national and international journals.

Mag. Catalina Álvarez R.


Chemist of Universidad de Antioquia with graduate studies in Plastic and Rubber Processing of Universidad EAFIT - ICIPC. He holds the title of Master of Engineering in the same university. She has taken specialized courses in gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography. She worked as chemist  in the maintenance and technical support area at Khymos and in the toxicology lab of the transport secretary office of Medellín. She works as researcher and professional of the ICIPC chemical labs since 2012.

Software

El ICIPC has developed the following software in topics like optimization of extrusion process, injection of polymers and in the food sector in areas such as migration and permeation:

  • Inyectools® are a set of computational tools to streamline the design process and components of plastic processing equipment parts as well as the optimization of processes in the plastics and rubber.
  • Extrutools® are a set of computational tools to optimize extrusion processes thanks to the calculation of variables such as operating curves of an extruder or screw extrusion.
  • Migrasoft® is web application that enables the validation of compliance with specific migration regulations following the guidelines laid down in EU regulation 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.
  • Permeasoft® is a software that allows you to adjust the barrier properties of multilayer plastic packaging according to the requirements of preservation of food or drink, and in turn, estimate the shelf life of a product for a packaging and storage conditions given.

Migrasoft

Migrasoft® is a software tool for validation of compliance with specific migration regulations following the guidelines established in EU regulation 10/2011 (up amendment No 202/2014) on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

Some features are:

  • Classification of food according to the categories defined by EU regulation 10/2011
  • Definition of the simulants assigned according to EU regulation 10/2011, depending on the food category
  • Determination of time and temperature of the migration assay following the lineaments of EU regulation 10/2011, the shelf life and storage conditions
  • Fat reduction factor (FRF) is automatically estimated according to the relationship Migrant - Simulant - Category Food
  • Combined analysis of migrants and simulants, evaluating in each case whether the specific migration limit (SML) is exceeded
  • The sum of specific migrations are considered, checking that the overall migration limit is not overflown
  • Migration limits for restricted group defined in EU regulation 10/2011 are taken into account

Research, Development and Design

The generation and transfer of knowledge and technologies in polymeric materials, processing, and products make an essential part of our work as Institute as is highlighted in our mission “Turning knowledge into wealth”. The ICIPC through the service of Research, Development and Design (R&D) promotes and undertakes applied research projects in partnership with the plastic and rubber sector, as well as related-sector industries, such as automotive, pharmaceutical, food, energy, health, ICT, construction, among others.

Specialized laboratory services

 

The ICIPC has a wide range of laboratory services for plastic, rubber and related industries, providing analytical services and polymer and additives characterizations as well as services for a continuous monitoring to assure the quality of products and processes.

Our laboratory is part of the Colombian Laboratory System, offering a variety of tests under ASTM, ISO, DIN and NTC standards. The ICIPC lab has 10 accredited tests by the Accreditation Agency of Colombia (ONAC) with code 14-LAB-064, according to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard and certified under ISO 9001:2008.
